I think it was the 1990s, when a Grand Wizard of the KKK named David Duke ran for the US Senate in Louisiana. It was the 2000's when an insurgency movement called The People's Republic of Texas tried to secede Texas from the USA.

You are talking about an extreme minority fringe. And this fringe exists on both sides. Whether it is some asshole driving 180 miles to kill blacks for being black, or some other asshole driving a car into a crowd of white people for being white. Don't empower it.
