I don't know if I'm any wiser... but.

I don't think humanity is more "assholeish" than in the past. Today the billionaire archenemy is Elon Musk. Before it was Bill Gates. That's a wash.

Today the evil world leaders are Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump. Decades ago, the evil world leaders were Adolf Hitler and Josef Stalin. I'll call Putin/Trump an improvement.

Prince Harry is just a lost soul. I wouldn't consider him an asshole.

Then you consider some of the shit that went down in colonization of the Americas, or Chinese dynasties, or the Inquisition, or that Romans ordered every young boy murdered in an attempt to get a toddler named Jesus.

If you want to believe in the good of humanity again, or at least believe the world isn't going to shit, I do recommend Better Angels of our Nature by Steven Pinker. It's a long read, and I don't agree with all of his conclusions, but there have always been tyrannical people in positions of power, and there have always been those individuals or pockets of people who have had an opportunity to choose a life of happiness. I do believe there are more opportunities available today to find happiness, for more people, than in most times in the past.
