I appreciate the direction this conversation has taken.
Look. I am all for a set of impartial laws that apply to everybody and are fairly enforced.
I believe that is the intent for which what the UN was started.
Unfortunately the United Nations has been hijacked. I was very against the rush to go to war with Iraq in 2003. Yet if you listen to the United States and UK talking at the UN, it was a massive push to act upon an falsified impulse.
So my question is, how can we create a fair UN / ICC / etc that has teeth, and also impartiality? One that Putin will respect before he invades Ukraine, or one that the US will respect before they invade Iraq. Or one that China will respect before they nibble territory from neighboring countries.
Right now, we have a 5-nation Veto power on the Security Council. And the US, Russia, and China each veto proposals that run against their own strategic interests. It is an imperfect system. But at least it's a system.
ps - I read and liked your article on Gaza. I personally pray for peace. I also personally think both sides can share plenty of blame. And finally, I think both sides are at the mercy of leaders who don't have their peoples' best interests at heart. (for example, Netanyahu absolutely does not care about bringing hostages home safely)
