I agree that it is a sad truth that everything is about messaging. However, that is the way the world works - and not just US Elections.

However, I would challenge something you said - I don't believe the Dems actually do care about helping people improve their situations. When's the last time Steny Hoyer actually did anything to help anybody? But he's comfortable and happy sitting as House Majority Leader.
