Anecdotally, I would disagree. I grew up reading Dr. Ruth, Ask Prudence, and other female columnists on the regular. Judy Blume of course, and the Harry Potter series was by far the best fiction I ever read; I knew JK Rowling was a woman before I started the series.
On Medium, I certainly follow more women here than men. Anne Frank was just as seminal as Viktor Frankel. The only TV court series I ever really got into was Judge Judy. I might be cherrypicking examples, but I try to follow who I find interesting and useful, and not because of subconscious gender preference. I think my literary sources are fairly gender balanced, at least from the past 100 years.
On the other hand, there ARE differences between the sexes. I was never going to be into romance novels. Rom coms were situational. I never expected girls to be excited about watching old 1980s Arnold Schwarzenegger flicks in college on a Thursday night. I had my sports and cars magazines, which were mostly for men by men. Girls had Cosmo and Seventeen.
